St. Kitts and Nevis – the undiscovered Caribbean

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis may not be on your top 10 lists of places to visit or you may not have even heard of these islands,—but if one took the time to research them, one would soon discover that these untouched islands offer a true getaway unlike any other islands!

St. Kitts and Nevis are located in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, southeast of the U.S. Virgin Islands and to the west of Antigua. Delta offers direct service from Atlanta and it is about a 4-hour flight to St. Kitts. We currently do not offer air service into Nevis; however, it is a short ferry ride over to Nevis once you arrive into St. Kitts.

And what is there to do, you ask? Well, St. Kitts is home to a dormant volcano, Mt. Liamuiga, making its vegetation lush and the opportunities to explore endless! St. Kitts has set aside more than a quarter of its land as a National Park and also has preserved an 18th century battle site, Fort Brimstone, which the U.N. has designated as a World Heritage Site. St. Kitts, although only 23 miles long and 5 miles across, it is full of unspoiled beauty that is waiting to be discovered. If diving is your cup of tea, the island boasts new and untouched dive sites. If you enjoy hiking, explore the dormant volcano and be guided down 1,000 feet to its crater floor! Those who are active and/or love nature will fit right in on the island of St. Kitts. The capital of St. Kitts, Basseterre, offers an array of duty-free shopping and dining options. The cruise port is located here as well as the public ferry transfer over to Nevis.

Delta Vacations offers 5 different accommodation choices ranging from a plantation—Ottley’s Plantation Inn, situated on 35 acres of rolling lawns and gardens in the foothills of Mt. Liamuiga with breathtaking views of the Atlantic—to the lively, active property of St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino. You will not find any tall skyscrapers or high-rise hotels here, as the law in St. Kitts states that no building may be taller than the surrounding palm trees. All 5 properties are unique in their own way and offer different amenities. Whether you are looking for a quiet property, an active property, or even a dive resort, St. Kitts has what you are looking for!

Now let’s hop on the short, 45-minute ferry over to Nevis! Nevis is small in size when compared to St. Kitts; it is approximately 7 miles in diameter, spanning a total of 36 square miles. Nevis is shaped as a cone with Nevis Peak in the middle, and at times, the clouds hover around the peak offering a majestic view. Hiking is a popular activity for visitors; a hike up to Nevis Peak offers breathtaking views of the island, and also of the surrounding islands of St. Kitts, Antigua, Guadelupe, and others. The island also boasts several beautiful beaches—both white sand and black sand. Pinney’s Beach and Nisbet Beach are by far the most famous; however there are several others that offer a perfect opportunity to swim or just relax. Apart from the beaches and hiking options, Nevis is also a perfect place for snorkeling, diving, horseback riding, biking, and the list goes on! The capital of Nevis, Charlestown, offers duty-free shopping and dining options, and is home to the public ferry transfer.

Delta Vacations offers 5 different accommodation choices, again (like St. Kitts), ranging from plantations—Nisbet Plantation Beach Club and Montpelier Plantation & Beach—to the well-known Four Seasons Resort Nevis. Nisbet Plantation Beach Club has received several prestigious awards, including the AAA Four Diamond Award, Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold list of the World’s Best Places to Stay, Travel + Leisure’s top 500 list (#1 in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the Bahamas), and more. It is truly a must-see! Four Seasons Resort Nevis re-opened their doors in 2010 after remodeling from the last big tropical storm that struck the islands, and is now better than ever! This is a perfect resort for families, couples and honeymooners, offering an array of activities including a Robert Trent Jones II golf course, water skiing, wakeboarding, tubing, banana-boat rides, bottom fishing, chartered snorkeling, and much more!

It’s such a beautiful island! When we have company, they always think they’ll be bored because it’s such a small island. By the time they leave, two weeks later, we’ve filled everyday with sight-seeing trips and they’re amazed at just how much there is to do here.
