I was fortunate to travel to Florida several times as a kid, but never had I seen the Florida coast. So when my boyfriend suggested we visit Fort Myers for a long weekend, I couldn’t say no. Here are some of my favorite Fort Myers attractions:
The Beached Whale
My favorite meal of our weekend in Ft. Myers came from The Beached Whale on Ft. Myers Beach. You’ll get amazing views on the rooftop—appropriately called The Lookout Lounge—along with the amazing fare from The Beached Whale’s menu. I definitely recommend the seafood, and if you like a little spice, you definitely need to try the buffalo shrimp—it’s amazing!
Edison & Ford Winter Estates
To please my history-buff boyfriend, I agreed to visit the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. At first, I wasn’t too thrilled about giving up my precious beach time to go see a couple of houses, but in the end I was very glad we went. These winter homes offer a peek into the lives of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, and their families. Plus, you’ll get to stroll through 20 acres of botanical gardens featuring more than 1,700 plants. Perhaps the most impressive of the plants is the massive Banyan tree, which is one of the largest in the continental U.S.A.
Sanibel Island
This island retreat feels like a whole new world. Just across the bridge from the hustle and bustle of Ft. Myers is a calm, laid-back island filled with small—and amazing—restaurants and cute, kitschy shops. My favorite was probably She Sells Sea Shells, which carries shells (naturally), clothing, handbags, trinkets, and more.
Sanibel also boasts 22 miles of paved bike paths for you to explore, and renting bikes is easy since there are rental places all over the island. The paths weave and wind between all the great attractions and interesting nature the island has to offer.
Perhaps my favorite thing about our day on Sanibel Island was watching the sunset. Simply walk your way down the beach to the western side of the island and settle in for a simply stunning view.
With great restaurants, amazing views, bike trails and of course beautiful beaches, Fort Myers makes a great place for a weekend getaway.
