My favorite holiday tradition is adopting a family from the Aliveness Project. We’ve done so for several years now. A group of us gets together and shops for the family, then wraps the gifts and delivers them to the Aliveness Project. There, they construct a box full of the gifts, plus food, handmade stockings, cookies, and other treats. It’s really heartwarming to see all the effort and care that goes into this yearly tradition!

  • Audrey Williams

My favorite holiday tradition is the family breakfast on Christmas morning, because breakfast foods are the best anyway!

  • Kathleen

We LOVE to travel. Seriously, LOVE to travel and are passing down that passion to our young sons. Every place we go, no matter the season, we purchase a Christmas ornament. Sometimes, especially for summer trips, we can’t find a “real” ornament so we make do with something that we can hot glue into an ornament. We have some crazy ones with this approach including a bottle opener from Hungary, a Bocas Jr. key chain from Argentina and a Bison refrigerator magnet from Yellowstone. Our favorite holiday tradition is to unpack the ornaments and, as we place them on the tree, remember all the trips. We talk about the sites we saw, the people we met, the food we ate, the total experience. It is like going on the trip all over again. I love that we are teaching our little boys that experiences are much more valuable than stuff and that trips can last in our memories long after the tans have faded and the bags unpacked.

  • Michelle

My favorite Christmas tradition is to get pajamas on christmas eve! So comfy and makes you want to go to bed so Santa can come! I am 37 and it still works for me. Mom gets them every year even though she is in Florida and we are in New York. We need our warm jammies in NY!

I hosted my favorite holiday tradition lastnight and that is decorating holiday sugar cookies with my friends and their children. My favorite holiday tradition is keeping the Italian cooking tradition alive. Every Christmas since I can remember my family makes little honey balls called struvula. It is a very time consuming day but it’s a tradition and we must make them. Now that we are all older we are teaching the nieces and nephews how to make so that the tradition will live on as grandma is getting older. On Christmas Eve we still eat the feast of 7 fishes or is it 12. I wish you all Merry Christmas.

  • Sharell

My favorite tradition is breaking out all the board games and playing cards with my siblings (and their significant others now) and laughing at each other as we win and/or lose each game. We also take turns running into the kitchen to help my mom with the food. This year we’re breaking out the Michael Jackson dance game for the Wii. This is going to be so much fun!

Part of our family tradition is spending a little time celebrating my birthday. The holiday craziness makes it easy to overlook, but my mom & dad always make sure to make it feel special. Oh yeah, my birthday is on the 23rd, so this Hawaii trip giveaway would REALLY make it awesome! :)

  • Jody Williamson

My favorite part is on Christmas Eve. My family and I get together after church for a steak supper, steaks, cottage cheese, toast and the optional potato. Then after supper we sit around and open gifts. Then Christmas morning we go for turkey dinner at a relatives out of town. But I always look forward to that steak for supper.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_wafer Debra Haras

There are so many great traditions to look forward to during the holidays. The one I enjoy most is on Christmas Day, meeting at a different relative’s house, each year, and taking part in opłatek wafers that are exchanged as a symbol of forgiveness between two people and is meant to remind participants of the importance of Christmas, God, and family. It forces all to mingle with one another, wish an individual greeting and make amens until another year!

  • http://noslowallgo.com Matt K

My family has always done our ‘major’ celebration on Christmas Eve; oddly enough, my favorite tradition is actually our lazy Christmas Day afterwards — a late, lavish brunch, plenty of family time, and figuring out how to operate our presents.

We go to downtown Salt Lake City to see the lights at temple square as a family, then go to The Melting Pot for dessert and to warm up.

  • Lisa Gray

My favorite family tradition is making Christmas cookies together. The kitchen is usually a total mess while we are trying to get all the baking done. But it is worth it to clean up the mess we made when we see all the cookies we made.

  • http://www.marahchristine.com Marah Pahl

  • Candi Sapletal

Watching the grandkids open their presents via webcam.

  • Shirley Humphries

My favorite holiday traditions are evolving following the death of my father and also my husband. Living alone the last few years my favorite tradition is to wake up early, fix a pot of coffee, and put down on paper 10 ways in which I have been blessed since the Christmas prior. I try to be very thankful for the gifts in my life that are not material gifts, such as my dearest family and friends, my pets. I then realize how “rich” I truly am. I then enjoy time with my mom and family. It really brings the true meaning of Christmas into my heart!

  • http://owenmcclaingolf.com owen mcclain

We like to get up and do a full breakfast, including Swedish tea ring and cocao for a good chocolate fix, then open up presents.

  • Jason DeJong

My favorite holiday tradition has always been Christmas Eve at my Great Grandma’s house. Since I can remeber this was always the place were all of my family meet. This was the only time all year, we were all together in the same spot. Unfortnetly my Great Grand Mother passed away this past April. All I will have is my 29 years of wonderful memories. This year we will start a new family tradition of Christmas eve at my house. We’ll miss you Grandma.

My favorite holiday tradition is fairly new — my parents became grandparents when my niece was born in 2009, so now we have Christmas morning gift-giving and all-day snacking at “gammy and pop-pop’s” house! It’s so much fun to have a child around for the holidays again – her excitement helps bring the magic back! :)

My favorite holiday tradition is putting the kitchen on lock-down for 1 or 2 days with my mom and sister (and occasionaly brother) to bake mountains of Christmas cakes, cookies, and candies, then delivering said delectables to family and neighbors. The benefits of this sugary holiday tradition are three-fold: (1) confectionary deliciousness, (2) bonding time with the women I love but don’t have the privilege of living near, and (3) giving small but love- and labor-intensive gifts (which are undoubtedly the best sort of gift).

Since my wife and I hail from different states and I have a job that often requires me to work holidays, our favorite tradition is getting together with family and friends. Most years we can, but not always on the holiday itself. We keep Delta and our computers busy trying to make it happen despite a heavy load of travelers trying to do the same thing but the holidays aren’t the holidays without seeing our families.

  • Wendy OConnor

Our family tradition is going downtown for Christmas Eve Midnight Mass at the Basillica. It’s always super-cold & super-late by the time we get downtown. Parking is crazy & mass is packed but the candlelight, the music & the bells tolling on our way out make it all seem like it really IS Christmas!

my favorite holiday tradition is getting the kids together to sign the xmas cards!!

  • Susan Mills

My favorite Christmas tradition is the gift war.
Everyone wanting to participate brings a gift,
non gender specific, and a pile is made. Every one participating pulls a number out of the hat.
Going in numerical order, person #1 chooses and opens a gift. Person #2 can either open a gift or steal the gift from person #1. This procedure goes on with each gift only being allowed to be stolen 3 times. The “war” is over when the last gift is opened. It certainly takes off the pressure to buy the perfect gift for everyone in the family.

Wow, would I like to get away from the cold weather to go sit on this beautiful beach at sunset! Our favorite family tradition is the opening of gifts from our STOCKINGS on Christmas morning. These are NOT just any old stockings filled with fruit, nuts and candy. These gifts are our main Christmas presents to each other. They are wrapped in beautiful paper, and we go around the room, taking turns, one person opening one gift at a time, and we try to GUESS what we are about to open. Favorites from the past have been tickets to favorite sporting events or concerts, a cashmere scarf and soft leather gloves, gift cards to a favorite restaurant, or her favorite perfume for Mom. But I GUARANTEE you tickets to Hawaii would top ANYTHING we’ve EVER found in our stockings!

  • Robert Rich

Sure, make me chose just one. OK, my favorite holiday tradition takes place on Christmas day. My mother in law will hide several presents throughout her home and send the kids on a scavenger hunt for them. The best part about this tradition is watching the kids… well even the adults for that matter, try to make since out of the clues she gives them. It usually will bring someone in the group to almost wetting themselves from laughing so hard. It is a lot of fun and it helps me to remember what life should be about. Laughter with friends and family, enjoying what you do every day and VACATIONS! Yeah, I just threw that last part about vacations in.

My favorite holiday tradition is trying to figure out mom’s secret code. My mom has, for years, put a secret code on our Christmas presents. Sometimes its a number, a sticker, certain wrapping paper, or bows. We dig under the tree every Christmas Eve trying to figure out what mom’s code is before we open the presents. There are four of us and we try to figure out which number or sticker is ours. If we figure it out we can open them, if not try again! It is a fun tradition that mom started long ago so we couldn’t figure out what we were getting for Christmas.

When I was little girl it was all about getting the wole family together waiting for the First star to apear, and that is when I was busy looking for the first star and an angel would put a gift under the tree for me. I always found the first star, but I never caught the angel.

My parents were not poor and Santa was good to us…lol. I cherish those traditions and being taught to think about others and to think outside the box.

My children loved this tradition I started when they we’re quite young. In order to keep “the reason for the season” front and center during this hectic holiday, we set up the Nativity scene December 1st. We placed the 3 wisemen in another part of the house. Each day my children moved their wiseman closer to the stable. Christmas morning, before gifts were popened, the wisemen arrived at Jesus’ manger. It isn’t historically accurate, but the tradition meant enough that they are carrying it on with their own families!

  • David Wasserman

My favorite Christmas tradition combines both what I grew up with in New York and new ones I’ve adopted since moving across the country to San Diego. We get up early Christmas morning, drive down to the beach, paddling out to go for a surf early in the morning. There’s a great community feeling in the water on Christmas morning- lots of people surf with Santa hats on, hooting and hollering. We surf for a few hours, come in and have coffee- usually someone brings muffins and there’s an impromptu breakfast in the parking lot. Then we stop by a friend’s house to visit with their family for Christmas lunch, then an afternoon movie and wind down the day early. Peaceful, fun, spent with family and friends- excited this year to share this tradition with my wife (married a few months ago)!

Each year we tell stories of Christamas’s past and pass the tradition on to the kids. My 13 year old niece has started coming to learn how to cook all the special dishes and that too is how the tradition passes on. The spirit of tradition is being carried on one generation at a time!

My Christmas’s growing up was going to bed(there were 5 other siblings) at our normal time, somewhere around 9 pm, and hoping Santa would stop at our house before the next morning. Our house was decorated with lights outside(so Santa could see our house), but we had nothing inside. Our father worked til midnights, and we hoped he would not come across Santa and scare him away, from the milk and cookies we left out. When we awoke, we found a beautifully decorated tree, surrounded by presents for all. Only years later we came to realize that our father and mother worked like the dickens through the night to accomplish this feat. Yet to us it seemed magical and wonderful. Thanks Mom and Dad…it started a great tradition!

Christmas morning, we’d wake up, get dressed and either I or my little sister would distribute the gifts from under the tree and in our stockings to the 4 of us while mom heated up the rolls and dad poured the orange juice. Then we would open up each present one by one as the others watched and ate rolls and drank juice until all of the presents were opened. My favorite holiday tradition occurs at 12:01am on Christmas morning. My husband and I exchange our gifts as soon as it turns Christmas day. By this time, we’ve usually finished putting together all the kids gifts from Santa, filled the stockings, eaten the cookies, drank the milk, etc. It’s a time for us to reflect on the year of fun times, open our gifts, enjoy each other’s company, and relax during what we fondly refer to “the calm before the storm”. I so enjoy that alone time which is usually few and far between.

A lot of comments going on here I see!

In general, my FAVORITE tradition is being with my family … AND ugly sweater parties.

BUT the even better part occurs on Christmas Eve. It takes approximately 4hrs to open presents (regardless how many there are). Opening them ONE by ONE in a circle of 14 people explaining what it is and who it’s from. Then we realize the best gift in the end is STILL when we give to the less fortunate. Side note: This elaborate 4hr Christmas gift exchange leads to us getting home at 2am :)

  • Mac

My favorite tradition is what we call “The 1225″. 1225 is a Family lunch that starts at exactly 12:25 PM every year. It is celebrated by me, my wife, my son, my daughter, my mother, my father, my sister, my 2 brother in laws, my sister in law, my 3 nephews, my 3 nieces, my father in law, and my mother in law. We enjoy The 1225 with home-cooked, freshly prepared turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, banana pudding, pumpkin pie, brunswick stew, cranberry, dinner rolls, apple cider, and holiday wine which makes up our yearly menu of 12 items. We enjoy great food and conversation and then wrap all of our cheer in an afternoon of singing Christmas songs. Depending on the side of the family, the traditions vary from catching a Christmas-release movie to homemade pizzas to white elephant gift grabs. But while the traditions may be different from each part of our family to another, the best thing they all share is the tradition of togetherness during the holiday season.

I’m fortunate this year. My father, at 83, had to have triple bypass surgery in November, right before Thanksgiving. He’s doing amazingly well and I’m so grateful that this year, I have the best present of all… another Christmas with my dad. My sister and I have been flying on Delta back and forth from Seattle to Ohio since November. Thanks Delta for the travel… and now? We sure could use a trip to Hawaii! :) Tonight? We’ll be making gingerbread cookies with my mother’s recipe. She passed away ten years ago, but we still make her cookies and ice them in memory of her. <3 Happy Holidays, everyone.

The most memorable christmas tradition I had was when I was stationed at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. A few of us WACs decided to share Christmas with those children we saw over the border in Juarez. We got some box lunches, milk and christmas candy canes..went over the border to a local bar, rented a room from the bartender and put up a small christmas tree and brought all of the children in from the cold streets and sang songs and fed them. Some of them were only 5 yrs old carrying infants on their backs begging for money at the bridge only to run to a bar and give their drunken parents the money.

  • Lori Jones

I think I’d have to say I love putting up the family Christmas tree the most because it’s a hodge podge of ornaments collected from the time our family began each with it’s own memory. Some were bought each year to signify something special from that year. Others were made with love but as we put them up I will hear “Mom remember when…???”

My favorite Christmas tradition is picking out the Christmas tree. When I was a kid living in Alaska we had to go out in early November before the snow got too high and pick out tree. We’d flag it then come back a few weeks before Christmas and the search would be on to find our flagged tree that was now completely covered in snow. To this day we still go out the pick the perfect tree…just these days it’s at a ucut tree place not the wilds of Alaska. :-)

Our family tradition is sitting around the Christmas tree in our living room in our PJs (the uglier the better) after everyone has opened their presents. The Christmas music is playing loudly while we eat hot croissants and drink hot chocolate or coffee and there is always a mimosa available for the adults, yippee. It’s a must, if one of your gifts is a tie, hat or scarf that you wear your gift for the morning celebration. Both my parents died this year and so during the holidays I’ve been reminiscing about how my parents always made Christmas special, no matter how old I got. My fondest memory is working with my Mom on our holiday craft that would be displayed at Christmas. My favorite craft was stacking pudding cans and painting them red and then putting glitter on them with red ribbon. They became candle holders for the tables. We used them for years.

All my 7 year old daughter wanted for Chritmas was to make sure all the kids had gifts under the tree come Christmas morning. We Adopted a family that served in the military and is in need of a little help with Christmas. We get to meet the family’s and we bring Santa along to help us deliver the gifts. Being able to meet the family and see thire faces when we deliver the gifts is what Christmas is all about. The best feeling is being able to give and knowing they will have a great Christmas.

We exchange gifts, eat WAY too much stocking candy and just hang out on Christmas day. It is my favorite day of the year!
